Evidencehasshowntherearemanybenefitsofthis‘green’therapy,includingimprovingsocialcontact,socialandworkskillsandcopingabilities.It’swhatDrRachelBraggfromtheUniversityofEssexcalls‘psychologicalrestoration’.ShetoldtheBBC’sAllintheMindprogrammethatnature-basedtherapiesshouldbepartofa"toolkit"ofcareforpatients.
Onereasonwhygettingbacktonatureis,well,natural,issomethingcalledbiophilia,asortofunderstandingorempathywiththenaturalworld.AccordingtoenvironmentalpsychologistBirgittaGatersleben,“theideathatnatureremindsusoflife,andifwe(are)exposedtothenaturalelements,thenoursortofnegativefeelingsgetalmostimmediatelyreplacedwithpositiveemotions.”
